Growing up in the state of Nebraska, you often hear the saying boys dream of one day being a football player for the Huskers. Even if they don’t remember the success, there fathers and grandfathers do. The same can’t be said about Nebraska Basketball. Sure the program had a sliver of success in 1993 and 1994, but that was all overshadowed by the fact they were upset back to back times in the first round of the NCAA tournament. As it stands, the Huskers are the only power 5 conference team to have never won an NCAA tournament game.
With the oldest and most experienced team in the Big Ten this season, the Huskers have been battling to change that persona. Thursday nights game against Michigan State could be a step in the right direction according to the Lincoln Journal-star. The Huskers are going for a record 21st straight home win. The previous record was set back in 1967.
This season the Huskers showcase a high flying offense. In order to have a stellar offense, Nebraska has given up physicality on the boards. The one thing that scares the Journal Star is that the Spartans are good in categories the Huskers aren’t. I agree with the paper on this. We are one of the worst rebounding teams in the Big Ten, where Michigan State is at the top. We will have to play Tanner Bouchard at center, just to get some rebounding presence down low. He did a great job against Indiana cutting into the disparity on the boards.
Chris Basnett also talks about this being a signature win in what’s turning into a historic season for the Huskers. I totally agree with this as well. Nebraska has a history of starting hot and slowing down towards the end of the season. They had a rough patch in January, but a win tonight could propel them forward the rest of the season.
This could be the team that rewrites so many wrongs for the Huskers over the year. It’s all starts tonight with a victory over the No.6 Spartans. This once sad bad basketball program could be a glimmer of hope for a school who has struggled in so many sports recently. So I pose the question, is this the year Nebraska gets their first NCAA tournament win? I would like to say yes, but only time will tell.
