Finding Respect for LGBTQ students

Have you ever heard the saying that two wrongs don’t make a right? When reading this article about school being a hostile place for LGBT students by Mara Williams, I agree that these students shouldn’t be subjected to bullying and derogatory comments. The article points out there is more resources for these students in schools, but it hasn’t helped transgender and gender non conforming youth.

My feeling on this is even though I don’t believe being transgender, gay, or lesbian is right we still need to treat them with respect. Especially in middle and high schools. These kids are at a point, where they can’t escape the bullying. There not like adults who can avoid people who disrespect them. They have to keep going back to school everyday and deal with the kids who treat them bad. In general I think there needs to be a reconstruction of discipline in public schools in the U.S. Kids need to know that even if they don’t agree with someone’s life choices, they still have to treat them with respect.

Nebraska Basketball: The journey to 21 home wins

Growing up in the state of Nebraska, you often hear the saying boys dream of one day being a football player for the Huskers. Even if they don’t remember the success, there fathers and grandfathers do. The same can’t be said about Nebraska Basketball. Sure the program had a sliver of success in 1993 and 1994, but that was all overshadowed by the fact they were upset back to back times in the first round of the NCAA tournament. As it stands, the Huskers are the only power 5 conference team to have never won an NCAA tournament game.

With the oldest and most experienced team in the Big Ten this season, the Huskers have been battling to change that persona. Thursday nights game against Michigan State could be a step in the right direction according to the Lincoln Journal-star. The Huskers are going for a record 21st straight home win. The previous record was set back in 1967.

This season the Huskers showcase a high flying offense. In order to have a stellar offense, Nebraska has given up physicality on the boards. The one thing that scares the Journal Star is that the Spartans are good in categories the Huskers aren’t. I agree with the paper on this. We are one of the worst rebounding teams in the Big Ten, where Michigan State is at the top. We will have to play Tanner Bouchard at center, just to get some rebounding presence down low. He did a great job against Indiana cutting into the disparity on the boards.

Chris Basnett also talks about this being a signature win in what’s turning into a historic season for the Huskers. I totally agree with this as well. Nebraska has a history of starting hot and slowing down towards the end of the season. They had a rough patch in January, but a win tonight could propel them forward the rest of the season.

This could be the team that rewrites so many wrongs for the Huskers over the year. It’s all starts tonight with a victory over the No.6 Spartans. This once sad bad basketball program could be a glimmer of hope for a school who has struggled in so many sports recently. So I pose the question, is this the year Nebraska gets their first NCAA tournament win? I would like to say yes, but only time will tell.

Protecting those that didn’t have a choice

Just today I scanned across the most interesting editorial posted by the Chicago Tribune, dealing with Trump’s border wall. In the article it talks about a compromise between Democrats and Trump. The solution they propose is congressional Democrats let Trump build the wall if he promises to protect the dreamers protected by DACA in this country.

I completely agree with this solution offered by the Chicago Tribune. I understand that these 800,000 children didn’t come over to this country by their own choice. Some of them have grown up in this country there entire life, and to throw them out is obviously not the solution. To go along with this, I also think they should be taking the necessary steps to become an American citizen. As long as they are doing that, it shouldn’t be a problem they stay here. We have to realize at one point we were all immigrants. Majority of these men and women are hard working citizens.

The article also does a good of pointing out that there is a definite need for increased border security. We can’t shy away from the fact, that we have a problem with people coming over illegally and we need to fix it. Just go ask the border control agents in Texas and Arizona who deal with these individuals on a daily basis. Mixed in with the rest of the crowd at the border there are drug dealers and rapist getting in. I do realize securing our border won’t be cheap and doesn’t eliminate these dangerous people that are American citizens, but if we can get arid of a chunk of the problem its a move in the right direction. Lets put it this way, we have invested billions of dollars on far less important things in the history of our country.

Have we got a deal for Trump: Wall money for DACA protection

Sports, Politics, and More. What I follow on twitter?

What I believe or follow is all my own. Some people may like or disagree with what I share or who I like, but that’s the nature of the beast of social media. In a world where so many people are so quick to judge you over what pops up on your social media, I want to give you my readers a chance to understand why I follow what I do on social media. Below is a list of ten different people and things I follow on the platform twitter.

  1. @koolaid– Man do I love me some Kool-Aid! Growing up my parents didn’t buy lot’s of pop, so Kool-Aid was the go to drink a lot of the time. Plus there is over 90 flavor combinations so what’s not to love. They use their twitter, to promote new products like Kool-Aid Sparklers and collaborate with celebrities. This Christmas they teamed up with Lil John the rapper, to create a Christmas album promoted through twitter.
  2. @espn– Being the sports junkie that I am, ESPN is the go to place for me. The company does a great job of using their twitter account, to give updated scores around a variety of sports. I also always get a good chuckle, with some of the memes and interviews they post as well.
  3. @EASPORTS_MUT- One of the things I enjoy to do in my free time is play video games. I have been playing Madden since 2003, when my older brother bought it for the PlayStation. The game has advanced now, to a point where you can upgrade and buy packs of players through Madden Ultimate Team. The twitter account gives insider information to new packs EA is releasing as well as historical players they are offering on the game for a limited time. If you play the game and want some insider information, following the page is definitely worth thinking about.
  4. @JournalStarNews – I might be a little bias, but in my opinion the best paper in Nebraska. They do an excellent job of covering high school sports in the state. From in depth reports, to weekly ratings of high school sport teams. I also enjoy how they cover a wide variety of stories from around the state. Ron Powell who has been at the paper along time does a great job as a sports reporter. His knowledge of high school sports in Nebraska definitely comes through in his writing.
  5. @realDonaldTrump – I like how the president we have now, uses technology to state his opinions. Their have been news organizations out their that mislead you about what he is doing or who he is. He uses twitter to call them out, and to give updates on projects he is working on. A good example is the border wall that has been talked about a lot recently. He has been tweeting a lot out about what his goals are with it, and why we need it. The only thing I dislike about his tweets, is he does have the tendency to name call people. For someone who is president, probably not the most appropriate thing to do.
  6. @Raiders – My favorite sports team of all time, so of course they have to make this list. I get my up to date information about the team regarding players, and other projects they are talking on like their new stadium being built in Las Vegas. They also do a lot of great throwback videos, talking about important dates and games regarding the Raiders.
  7. @tailopez – I feel like everyone has that one twitter page they follow to get inspiration. For me that has to be Lopez. He is self made millionaire investor, who frequently post tips on how to be sound financially. He talks about the power of knowledge a lot, and not being afraid to fail and dream big.
  8. @wtimesworld – I don’t read a tremendous amount of national news, but when I do I like the Washington Times. I look at other papers to get points of view from the other side, but I find myself going back to the Times because it falls more in line with my conservative beliefs. David Boyer in my opinion does a good job writing politics in a way that doesn’t degrade Republicans and Democrats. He writes about what he sees and thinks, and leaves other side comments out of his work.
  9. @Wendys – I don’t necessarily eat here a lot, I am just a fan of Wendy’s roast. The company has become synonymous with some of the crazy comments they put out their. It has actually become so popular, that they have created their own roast fest. Crossing my fingers, but hopefully they will roast me this year.
  10. @SBNation– This is another great page to follow if you love sports. You can’t find great articles, along with up to the date information surrounding the sports world. What is the coolest thing about SB Nation, is you can like specifically their husker page, or whoever your favorite sport team is. This way they can filter you just the information you want to see.

What my favorite blog is?

Safe to say, one of my favorite hobbies growing up was sports. It doesn’t matter what the sport necessarily was, I loved to read and learn about it. A few years ago, I discovered SB Nation blog which is a platform where professionals and everyday individuals blog about the world of sports. I really like this site, because each team whether professional or college has their own page with thousands of posts. It is a great way to see what others think, about pressing topics surrounding your favorite sports teams
